Welcome to Westminster Presbyterian Church of Natchez, Mississippi, a family of God's People!
On October 17, 1979, Southern Mississippi Presbytery voted unanimously to give the historic building known as Greenwood Presbyterian Church of Cannonsburg, to Westminster, Natchez. The suggestion came from the Rev. D.M. Mounger, a member of the Committee on Church Extension, the committee responsible for using church properties constructively. This building, the sanctuary, was added to the educational facilities, which had been dedicated July 16, 1959.
In September, 1980, a project was begun by Willard Builders to move the historic building to the sight of Westminster in Natchez. The building was dismantled, bricks cleaned, windows, doors and shutters repaired or rebuilt. The original slave balcony and stairs were repaired and used. The original building was 30 x 50 feet and contained approximately eighty thousand slave made bricks, which now cover the outside of the reconstructed building. The sanctuary was enlarged to 38 x 60 feet to accommodate the present congregation. Fifteen of the original pews are currently in use. The sanctuary was dedicated on June 28, 1981.
The old Greenwood church, built in 1854 on land given by Thomas and Nancy Hall, overlooking the road from Natchez to Fayette, is no more. But the history and memory of that congregation lives on as the sanctuary of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Natchez, grows in seasons of love and worship.
